20-piece spring capsule wardrobe in the north | no. 16

Having a minimal wardrobe is something I find to be inspiring and calming. While I do own many more clothes than this, I am usually traveling and can only bring a few things at a time. Because our weather in the north during springtime is moody at best, I am often packing items that are transitional with the ability for layering.

This capsule includes a few pieces that I handmade, thrifted, sustainably sourced, and years-loved pieces still going strong. I hope this post inspires you to create a simple wardrobe for yourself that makes you feel good, look good, and do good.

If you’re looking to create your own capsule wardrobe, I encourage you to start just by paring down what you have. Even if it means storing some things away while you work with a few at a time. You get to know very quickly which pieces work and which don’t when you wear them almost every day.

20-Piece Capsule Wardrobe

My 20-piece capsule does not count shoes, jewelry, underwear and bras, socks or bags.

Dresses/One-Pieces

Handmade Linen Pinafore

I made this pinafore from a free sewing pattern, The Giorgi Pinafore from Fabrics-Store. I love the height of the waist, the layerability, and the lightweight nature of it for warmer weather. While I do have to mend this a little more than normal due to it’s handmade nature and one of my first handmade pieces, I love the extra care that goes into it.

Imbodhi Jumper in Black

I love this jumper. It is comfortable, versatile, HAS POCKETS, and is my go-to for traveling. It’s the perfect thing to drive in, do yoga in, or wear to thanksgiving. Either way, you won’t end up pinching your lovely tummy with any of this stretchy and flattering piece.

Pinyon Linen Overalls

These overalls are very comfortable and lately I’ve enjoyed pairing them with the Poppy top (talked about later). I got a size small, but I do feel like the waist is a little too baggy and I’ve been meaning to mend it. I wish it wasn’t as oversized, but they still make the cut. They no longer sell this color, but there’s a creamy tan available on their website.

Tops

Poppy Top

This top is actually part of a two-piece set from Little Cottonwood. I love thier clothing and wear it as much as possible! The pieces are always flattering and modest and are comfortable AND affordable. All of my favorite things in one. I love that this is two-pieces because with any capsule wardrobe, I need versatility. I can easily pair this with the set and make it similar to a dress, or mix-and-match with other pieces in my closet.

Kinnd Project Motherhood Tee

I love Kinnd Project (now Marine Hill Studio). The pieces are incredibly high quality and have been worn, run through a laundromat washer and dryer, stretched for breastfeeding and stretched by grabby toddler hands. The fit has not changed, the collar is PERFECT and the messages are my favorite. They are currently sold out of all of their tops because they are a small handmade shop, but I highly recommend them!

$1 Ribbed Tank Top

I normally don’t shop fast fashion at all. However, I needed a tank top and this one I saw at Walmart for $1. I thought to myself, I’m saving this from the landfill…because if I don’t buy it at a dollar, they’ll throw it away…right? Either way, at $1 it felt like the Lord providing a tank top for me when he knows I’m watching the budget. It’s held up great and is just what I needed!

ThredUp Ribbed Long Sleeve

This long sleeve is the perfect length to wear with leggings. It doesn’t totally cover the butt, but just enough to where I feel more comfortable walking down to the front desk at the hotel to ask for more towels.

Hope Carrier Crewneck Sweatshirt (not shown)

I wear this CONSTANTLY. I didn’t show it because I wear it all the time and it figured that when I went to photograph this post, I spilled oil on it and in a panic scrubbed it and held it in the shower and hung it to dry..but here it is on the Summit Church webstie!

Bottoms

Pippa Harem Pant

These pants are like the jumpsuit from Imbodhi…except pants! I like that I can mix-and-match. They are comfortable and modest, however, the pockets on these do tend to pull the pants down a little if you stick a phone in them, whereas the jumpsuit holds in place a little better. It may be because I should’ve sized down? But these are a small and fit everywhere else!

Poppy Skirt

The other half to the Poppy top, I love this set!

ThredUp Jeans

I love how these jeans fit! I got a larger size than I normally would and ordering online is always a toss-up for bottoms for me. I’m so glad I gave myself more room with a bigger size. These are comfortable and flattering. I would like to patch the holes in the knees though.

Workout Clothing

Everlane Pocket Legging

These come everywhere with me. I brought two pairs (as many as I have) They are comfortable, I work out in them, and they are especially nice for lounging around while keeping my blood flowing with the compression. Sometimes I don’t move around a lot in this hotel room and my circulation is bad, so having a little squeeze to keep the blood moving is so nice! I never travel without them.

Lounge Thrifted Legging

These leggings are a funny story. I would never buy these, however when it became clear from one sister that the other sister wasn’t going to want these for her birthday like I planned, I realized I had to keep them and get my $4 worth from thrifting. I’ve definitely done that, but these have effectively become my “laundry-day” “just-before-bed” leggings. I will never wear them out in public.

Thrifted Tank

This has holes in it and is wrinkled, but I thrifted it to be a “get sweaty” tank and it serves it’s purpose well.

Beyond Yoga Reversible Crop (not shown)

I didn’t show this one because, again, I was wearing it. I love how it’s reversible and so comfortable! I use it for working out and lounging alike. Unfortunately, they no longer sell it. However, they have many other options on their website.

Outerwear

Gifted Puffer Jacket

This puffer jacket is my favorite! I was gifted it for Christmas by my mama because she’s amazing and she knows I’m always cold. It is super long and has miraculous down or something that turns instantly warm from my body heat when I put it on. I am not sure where it’s from, but after owning this jacket, I highly recommend getting a long, puffer jacket if you live in a cold climate.

Thrifted Cardigan

I was looking for a slouchy, slightly cropped, chunky knit cardigan and this one fit the bill! I love that it’s thrifted and that I was able to support my favorite locally owned shop, Create and Curate Co. I’ve worn it with almost every outfit this trip and it’s the perfect way to layer when it’s not quite cold enough for a full jacket.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and are encouraged to create your own minimal wardrobe. While this is only a 20-piece wardrobe, I have found plenty of combinations to keep my style exciting and culled to what I love to wear. What are some of your favorite pieces in your closet?
